Doug Wilder's The Wilder Side of California, March 11, 2005 In this issue Doug publishes his top 20 picks of 2004. Included is 2001 Dyer Vineyard (95pts). He writes "With 2001, Bill and Dawnine Dyer have produced one of the best ever from their tiny 2.2 acre vineyard. A dark garnet color leads to a firmly packed nose of black olives, figs, cocoa and plum. On the palate the flavors show great intensity with complex shadings of black cherry, currant and spice. Their upcoming offering from Meteor Vineyard was one of my favorite at Premiere Napa Valley 2005."

Matt Kramer's New California Wine

Matt Kramer’s New California Wine, a 2004 revision of his 1992 classic Making Sense of California Wine has just been published. We like his revisionism! Here’s what he says about us: "Dyer Vineyard—This is the tiny, personal vineyard (and home) of two former winemakers, Dawnine Dyer (former head winemaker of Domaine Chandon) and Bill Dyer (formerly head winemaker of Sterling Vineyards). They own a scant four acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot on Diamond Mountain. Located in what might be called Diamond Mountain’s "golden enclave" where Diamond Creek, Von Strasser, Reverie, and Dyer are virtually cheek to cheek. Dyer delivers the real goods. Simply put, these are great Cabernets. They brim with the characteristic coca and blueberry scent of Diamond Mountain Cabernet/Merlot. Ditto for the soft, ripe tannins. Quantity is obviously minute; quality superb. If you can find it, get it".

Wine Spectator Weekly, Online Only, Sept 16, 2004. The issue is devoted to a celebrity red-wine face off featuring the best of Tuscany and California Cabernet. Jim Laube writes about California. About the 12 Cabernets selected to be reviewed the article says "They include both the usual suspects and some rising stars. Though 2001 was an outstanding vintage, it was a tricky one, and not all the big names produced terrific wines. Laube steers you to the winners." Here's what he says about 2001 Dyer. "A rich, earthy style, with loads of concentrated currant, anise, mineral and red cherry scents. Focused and persistent, it is well built, with firm, chewy tannins and a long finish that features ripe, juicy flavors. Best from 2006-2012. 90pts."

Gismondi on Wine, July 2004, Tony Gismondi, Canada’s top wine writer reviewed the 2000 Dyer Cabernet Sauvignon "…The wine opens with a peppery, spicy, licorice root and blackberry fruit nose mixed with cinnamon and saddle leather notes. Rich, round, intense and dry it has big mountain blackberry, peppery, spicy, licorice, black olive flavours with a cardamom, vanilla, chocolate finish. Warm full and well balanced it will improve even more 2 to 4 more years in bottle." Tasted 7/4/04 90pts
