2004 Dyer Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Released
While the home turf for Dyer Straits Wine Co. is the Dyer Estate Vineyard in the Diamond Mountain District, in 2003 we became aware of the Meteor Vineyard, a young vineyard just coming into production in the Coombsville/Tulocay region of Napa Valley. Planted by Mike Wolf in 2000 on a unique rocky knoll sitting above the valley floor, it’s truly what winemakers call a “natural site”. Once we saw it, we just couldn’t resist getting in on the first harvest.
Since 2003 the vineyard has garnered a lot of interest from winemakers (you’ll definitely hear more about it in the future!). We have continued to make wine from this vineyard and with the 2005 vintage will be launching a Meteor Vineyard release under its own label.
But right now we have 380 cases of a succulent, fruit forward (think blackberries and cassis), silky textured wine. It’s a juicy mouthful with just the right amount of tannin to keep it grounded. For this bottling, 20% Cab Franc from the Spring Mountain District was blended with 80% Meteor Vineyard Cabernet. We made this wine for the pure joy of it and want to put it in the hands of people who will enjoy it as well.
Suggested Retail-$43/bottle.
Quarterly Review of Wine, Eleanor & Ray Heald, summer 2007
Quarterly Review of Wine, Eleanor & Ray Heald, summer 2007, Napa's Micro Wave, in an article about rare small production wines, the Healds freature Dyer Vineyard. "..with yeilds of less than two tons per acre, they produce about 400 cases of intense, concentrated wine that is a true reflection of their hillside site... notes of black cherry, cocoa, cedar and anise with a balance of power and finesse"
AppellationAmerica.com, Catherine Fallis, November 8, 2006- 2002 Dyer Vineyard
AppellationAmerica.com, Catherine Fallis, November 8, 2006- 2002 Dyer Vineyard "This Cabernet is polished and elegant, in a very understated style, with cassis, fresh mountain air, cherry, and tar notes. It is full and softly textured with fine grained tannins, subtle fruit, and a long, bright, lively finish. Decanting will allow the full character of the wine to show itself, as will a bit of time in the cellar." www.appelationamerica.com
For those of you who wonder how these ratings work, here's what we recieved to notify us of the AA.com review. “If your wines get to this stage in the appellation America review process, it’s for sure that they have individual personality. Our reviewers have been tasked to sample hundreds of wines, but only to write on the ones that they can personally and confidently recommend”-ed
